När M/S Stockholm i sakta mak åker in i New Yorks hamn är fartyget överfullt. Förutom sina egna passagerare och besättningsmän finns över 500 personer från Andrea Doria ombord. En av dem är en 14-årig flicka som mirakulöst nog överlevt efter att ha kastats från sin hytt på Andrea Doria till Stockholms däck.
